Furlough 2 – Athens/Blackwell/Tulsa
Posted in Uncategorized on December 13th, 2011 by Valerie – Be the first to commentI set out to update the blog today and I found this post I had saved as a draft. I’m going to post it now as is and then work on more recent stuff…
It’s hard to believe we’ve only been on the road for two weeks! We had a great time in Athens–spent time with old friends and made some new ones. Friday morning we headed north. Jackson had a tummy bug so it took us several tries to get on the road. We drove up to Denison to see Basil and Rachel McClure, who are the ones we hold responsible for us ending up in Brazil. It was a quick visit but long enough to get to enjoy Basil’s cooking!
We were late getting away after lunch since Russ made the fatal mistake of going to take a 15 minute nap while I chatted with Basil and Rachel. It worked out to our advantage because we got to enjoy an Oklahoma sunset as we drove up I-35. We were really eager to get to Blackwell, because not only were Russell’s parents waiting for us, but some very special friends as well. My friend Jenny and her kids came down from Omaha for the weekend. I decided on Sunday that introducing Jenny as “my friend from college” seems insufficient, so I may start referring to her as “my sister from college”. The kids had a great time playing together with a minimum of injuries and we stayed up way too late chatting.
Today we drove over to Tulsa so we can catch an early morning flight on our way up to Winnipeg. We can’t wait to see my folks!
I’ve started to get a glimpse of just what it means for Jackson to be a third-culture kid. People see him and expect him to act within typical American cultural norms because he looks just like every other kid. But he’s being raised in Brazil and his peer group is Brazilian. So our little boy is a mixture of both cultures (well, technically three cultures since I am Canadian.)
